Pool Leak Detection
Professional pool leak detection pinpoints exactly where and why your pool is losing water — without tearing up your yard to find out.
What We Offer
About Pool Leak Detection
A leaking pool quietly wastes water, drives up your bill, and can undermine the deck and surrounding soil long before you ever see a crack. Pool leak detection is the diagnostic process of finding the exact location and cause of that water loss so it can be fixed correctly the first time. It is the essential first step before any repair — you cannot fix a leak you have not located.
What is pool leak detection?
Pool leak detection is a systematic, mostly non-destructive investigation that determines whether a pool is actually leaking (versus normal evaporation), then isolates the source to a specific component — the shell, the plumbing lines, a fitting, the skimmer, a light niche, or the equipment pad. Rather than guessing and digging, a trained technician uses a layered set of tests to narrow the problem down to a precise point, often within a few inches.
The goal is a clear answer: where the leak is, what is causing it, and what it will take to repair it.
Signs your pool may be leaking
A pool that loses more than about a quarter-inch of water per day is usually losing it to something other than evaporation. Common warning signs include:
- Water level dropping faster than the weather explains
- An automatic fill valve (autofill) that runs constantly
- Soggy, sinking, or unusually green spots around the deck or yard
- Cracks in the shell, plaster, tile line, or deck
- Air bubbles coming from the return jets
- A noticeable jump in your water bill
- Loss of water only down to a certain level (often a sign of a skimmer or return-line leak)
- Equipment that loses prime or runs dry
The bucket test: confirm before you call
A simple bucket test can help you confirm a suspected leak. Fill a bucket with pool water, mark the water line inside the bucket and the pool's water line, set the bucket on a pool step, and compare the drop after 24–48 hours with the pump running. If the pool drops noticeably more than the bucket, evaporation is not the culprit — you have a leak worth investigating professionally.
Our pool leak detection process
Professional detection works in layers, each ruling out a category of leak until the source is isolated:
- Visual inspection. A thorough look at the shell, plaster, tile, coping, fittings, skimmer, returns, light niches, and the equipment pad for visible damage and tell-tale signs.
- Pressure testing the plumbing. Each plumbing line (suction, return, main drain, cleaner line) is isolated and pressurized to reveal which lines, if any, are losing pressure — and roughly where.
- Dye testing. Near suspected entry points, a controlled dye is released and watched. Moving dye reveals leaks at cracks, fittings, skimmers, and light niches that are otherwise invisible.
- Electronic and acoustic listening. Sensitive hydrophones and electronic leak-detection gear "listen" for the distinct sound of water escaping under pressure, allowing the technician to walk a line to the exact leak point.
- Thermal imaging where useful. Temperature differences from escaping water can highlight a leak path beneath the deck or behind a wall.
- A written findings report. You receive a clear explanation of the leak location, the likely cause, and the recommended repair.
Equipment and technology we use
Accurate detection depends on the right tools used in the right order — electronic/acoustic listening devices for pinpointing leaks under pressure, pressure-testing rigs to isolate plumbing runs, professional dye kits for fittings and structural leaks, and thermal imaging where it adds value. No single tool finds every leak, which is why a layered approach matters.
Is leak detection destructive?
In the vast majority of cases, no. The entire point of professional detection is to find the leak before anything is opened up, so repairs are surgical instead of exploratory. Tearing up decking or replumbing on a hunch is exactly what a proper detection prevents.
Residential and commercial pools
The same principles apply whether it is a backyard pool, a spa, an HOA or apartment-community pool, or a commercial property. Larger and older systems simply have more lines, fittings, and potential failure points to isolate, so the process is more thorough.
What to expect
Most detections are completed in a single visit. Cost depends on the size and complexity of the pool, how many systems need to be tested, and how accessible the equipment and plumbing are. You should always receive a clear, itemized explanation of findings — and, ideally, a repair proposal — before any further work begins.
What happens after we find the leak?
Detection answers where and why. The next step is the fix. Once the source is confirmed, repairs are matched to the leak type — a plumbing splice or reroute, a fitting or gasket replacement, a structural crack repair, or a skimmer replacement.

Pool leak detection FAQ
How accurate is professional leak detection?
A layered approach (visual, pressure, dye, acoustic, thermal) typically isolates a leak to within inches, which is what makes a targeted, low-disruption repair possible.
How long does it take?
Most pools are diagnosed in a single visit. Complex or multi-leak systems can take longer.
Can you detect leaks in the underground plumbing?
Yes. Pressure testing isolates the failing line and acoustic listening walks it to the break, even when the line is buried.
Will I have to drain my pool?
Usually not. Most detection is performed with the pool full and the equipment running, which is essential for pressure and acoustic testing.
Does the pool type matter?
Detection works on all pool types — gunite/concrete, plaster, pebble, tile, fiberglass, and vinyl liner. The leak points differ by construction, but the diagnostic method adapts.
Can a pool have more than one leak?
Yes, and it is common. A thorough detection checks the whole system rather than stopping at the first leak found.
Think your pool is leaking?
If your water level is dropping faster than evaporation explains, the smartest move is to find the source before it costs you more in water — or damage. Reach out for professional pool leak detection and get a clear answer on what is happening and how to fix it.
